8th Grade ILA ~ Mrs. Rollis

My name is Lauren Rollis, and I am your eighth grade ILA teacher for the 2018-2019 school year.  I am going into my 16th year of teaching in which I started in the Springfield School District (Union County) teaching classes that ranged from Freshmen English, Senior English, SAT Prep, HSPA Prep, to Advanced Placement Literature.  This is my sixth full year at Brackman Middle School, and I am really excited about using the next ten months to build stronger readers and writers in preparation for standardized testing and high school!

The four marking periods will focus on the following:

Marking Period 1 – Truth & Individuality

Marking Period 2 – Conflict & Perseverance

Marking Period 3 – Community & Relevance

Marking Period 4 – Consequence & Acceptance

All marking periods will include open-ended writing, fiction and nonfiction readings, and novel analysis.

Classroom Rules:

  • No personal electronics - if you need it, the school will provide.
  • Be where you are supposed to be at all times.
  • Take direction from any adult in the building.
  • Cheating is never permitted - the student forfeit their grade and earn a zero.

Classroom Procedures:

  • ¨DO NOW—Every period a Do Now assignment will be on the board that is to be completed in the first 3 - 4 minutes of class.  These assignments will range in form but will provide a focus for the beginning of class.
  • ¨ABSENT WORK—For every day absent, the student has that many days to make up the work.  It is the student’s responsibility to find out what work was missed, complete the work, and submit the work to the teacher.  NO WORK = NO CREDIT!!
  • ¨PORTFOLIO—Every student is required to maintain a writing portfolio.  This portfolio will be left in the room at all times and will be used in preparation for next year.
  • ¨BATHROOM—Bathroom visits and other reasons to leave the room will be minimal.  Students will be allowed to leave based on teacher’s discretion.

Materials:

  • ¨A separate ELA notebook that provides paper and a means of collecting and housing handouts is required (please see me if this is an issue).
  • ¨A writing utensil must be in class every day; I will not provide one!
  • ¨Your books will be provided, and you must have the reading material with you EVERY DAY.  Failure to do so can lower your grade.
